I had some problems with the avrdude 5.3.1. It complains about reading the fuses properly.
A workaround is to use the -u switch to override this check. As the new version with this bug fixed is not available for windows, I tried to compile it myself. I used MinGW and MSYS and it worked, at least for me. I can now even omit the -F switch, which I had to use before, as the device signature was not read properly. If you want to try it, here you go.

Hi l got my Pocket AVR Programmer yesterday and installed the drivers smoothly by using this commment:A proper solution for running under Windows 7, including 64 bit, without turning off driver signing. But when I tried to program with it I get the rc=-1 error.
Download the windows driver from sparkfun, and unzip it somewhere.
Download a recent libusb release from sourceforge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/libusb- .. -releases/ and unzip it somewhere.
Take the libusb0.dll and libusb0.sys files from the sourceforge binamd64 directory, rename them to libusb0x64.dll and libusb0x64.sys, and replace those files in the sparkfun driver directory.
Replace the sparkfun libusb0.sys and libusb0.dll with copies from the sourceforge binx86 directory (renaming the sourceforge libusb0_x86.dll to libusb0.dll).
Your driver is now ready to go. Windows will complain during the install that the drivers aren't signed, but they actually are. Once installation is done, Windows will happily load the new drivers.
Sparkfun: please update those four files in driver zip file. That will fix it for everyone.
